Seeking scalable solutions to provide dignified temporary housing amid dual crises of surging cost of living and refugee influx, the Ministry partners with industry leader Lida Group.

A prototype sustainable modular village will be constructed on vacant public lands utilizing Lida’s expertise in prefabricated construction. Standardized modular units leverage shipping containers as structural skins.

Floorplans leverage maximized interior space within each container’s footprint. Shared amenities minimize footprint while fostering community. Photovoltaic panels power autonomous units entirely off-grid.

Renewable micro-utilities sustain independent water and power needs. A centralized facility treats and recycles all waste on-site. Vertical vegetable walls and aquaponics arrays flourish without fertile soils.

Constructed entirely off-site under strict factory quality control, modules truck-in fully outfitted for rapid assembly. An innovative hydraulic jacking system raises and secures units without heavy equipment.

Solar-hydrogen fuel cells provide resilient backup power. Internet-of-things controls monitor all building systems pinpointing maintenance needs proactively. Occupants access services virtually.

Externally, HardiePanel cement siding and geometric louvre sunshades create an aesthetically-pleasing modern architectural statement. Strategic landscape design maximizes privacy.

Pending evaluations of construction costs, energy performance and resident satisfaction, the village aims to prove modular construction scalably addresses housing shortage. If successful, the model may replicate nationwide.

Through open-source sharing of designs, the project fosters local manufacturing boosting sustainable jobs. Monitoring occupant socioeconomic outcomes evaluates modules’ ability to facilitate upward mobility.

Representing a bold public-private partnership, the prototype pushes boundaries for mobilizing affordable temporary housing solutions combining prefabrication, renewables and smart infrastructure innovation.
